So what is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy is a term first coined by the Osteopath Dr William Sutherland in the beginning of the last century. He experienced the bones in the head moving in relationship to each other - not rigidly fused as was believed at that time. He documented and taught from his own personal experiences as well as numerous case studies. He noted specifically about the tides experienced in our fluid body and all the anatomical and physiological processes that make up our being. His experience connected these expressions to the creative life force itself - a topic which has been of great discussion since time immemorial.
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a multi-dimensional system of practice which holds the body as a living form, a historical library of information, living and breathing with the expression of life itself. In this way, it is a practice which includes all the potentialities of expressions as they manifest, without the need to label or judge them. It is a practice where everything is perceived to be in relationship with each other. It is recognised that the inherent wisdom of life is working towards harmony with us at all times.
We know that ultimately everything around us is energy – this isn't knew information. This has been written in many ancient texts for thousands of years, and more recently been discovered by the scientist of our times.
But what is truly amazing is that WE can perceive and experience this energy. We can perceive it in all its colours and glory. We can feel it as tides in the fluids of our body, through the pulsations of our blood, through the expression of sensation in our nervous system and emotions. It can be experienced as patterns held in our body memory as trauma or excitement – all these stories are held in our being. We can sense it as light, as effervescence, as darkness, as heaviness, we can feel it as tingles, coldness, heat expansion and contractions. There are many expressions to perceive within and around us.
Through resonance and facilitation in CST we can more easily become aware of the deeper sensations, aware of learned patterns of protection and defences that we carry in every given moment - patterns of restricted flow where pain and trauma may lie. It is in the awareness of these deeper patterns/sensations, where the change and often profound healing can occur. Herein lies our true sense of freedom, a renewed relationship with ourselves where we can develop inner love, empowerment and health.
CST orients to the physical, emotional and mental aspects of our being in relationship to everything around us. It undoubtedly improves the quality of life of the young, the elderly, and those in pursuit of a deeper spiritual unfolding.
Possible symptoms of a restricted flow in our system can include:
Headaches
neck or back pain
chronic pain anywhere in the body
dizziness
low energy
poor immune system functioning
ringing in the ears
vision problems
sleep disorders
numbness
heat or cold sensitivity
temporal mandibular joint pain (TMJ)
depression
general nervous tension
poor digestion or elimination
stress
